Now the founder and CEO of Cash Flow Partners in New Jersey, Edward Espinal spent many years in the real estate industry, including overseeing New York Realty Masters. Formerly a professional musician, Edward Espinal still considers music of high importance in his life, especially for its ability to help him concentrate.
Music benefits the mind in a wide variety of areas, including increasing concentration. Dr. Masha Godkin, a professor at Northcentral University, identifies its activation of both hemispheres of the brain as a primary reason for that, noting that it increases memory and the ability to learn.
Another way that music increases concentration results from its ability to subdue automatic functioning the unconscious in the brain. Typically the unconscious heeds any sounds or other sensory input from the environment in order to alert the individual to the possibility of danger. In a harmless situation, that attention becomes fodder for countless distractions.
A study from the Stanford Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Laboratory showed that music could lengthen one’s attention span, increase retention of information, and facilitate predicting patterns. It achieves these results by activating certain areas of the brain dedicated to these functions.
